Few kilometers from Grottaglie, in the Province of Taranto, you can find the ravine of Riggio. The ravine is a deep valley with a waterfall, a small lake and a creek, with some important ancient human settlements, which proves the life of cave dwellers.
Of great significance is “the caggione”, a round chasm near the waterfall where there is a three-level human settlement made up of overlapping caves.
This settlement, belonging to the Greek Roman period, consists of a fortified wall, some graffiti and splinters of ceramic. A couple of Medieval churches in a cave with some frescos, the cenobitical hermitage, some underground tombs and a village with communal granary and a water tank can also be visited.
