Abbazia di S. Maria di Cerrate

Carved in the 11th century in white Lecce stone, precious vestige of the Pugliese Romanesque style, embellished with fine frescoes, the Church of Santa Maria of Cerrate stands in the centre of a typical Salento settlement; at one time, it was a monastery of greek orthodox rite, then became a centre of agricultural production focused on olives that were pressed in the traditional underground olive oil mill.
